When diamonds are sufficiently colored by nature they are called fancy colored. Diamonds can occur in a wide range of colors including red, purple & green. Different colors occur due to substitution of elements besides carbon into the crystal structure, structural deformation to the crystal lattice or staining of the crystal by natural radiation.Yellow diamonds generally get their color from the presence of Nitrogen.

Antique cut fancy colored diamonds are very scarce as it is often possible to improve the color by recutting to a more modern cut. Most have been recut over the years.
